How a Wellpoint Dewatering System Works

A wellpoint dewatering system lowers the groundwater table around an excavation by drawing water out through a line of small, closely spaced wells. It works best in sands and gravels, where water flows freely to the wellpoints.

A single stage of wellpoints can typically lower the water table by around 15 to 20 feet. For deeper excavations, two or more stages or a deep well system may be required. With decades of experience, our engineers can design the right layout for your soil and depth.

1

Installation

Self-jetting or PVC wellpoints are jetted or punched into the ground around the work area, typically 3 to 6 feet apart depending on soil conditions.

2

Riser Pipes

Each wellpoint is attached to a riser pipe that brings water up to ground level.

3

Swing Joints

Flexible swing joints connect each riser to a horizontal header pipe running along the trench or excavation.

4

Vacuum Action

The wellpoint pump creates a strong vacuum, pulling air and water through the header and drawing groundwater into every wellpoint simultaneously.

5

Discharge

Pumped water is sent to an approved discharge point, often through a treatment unit such as a settling tank.

Prepackaged Wellpoint Systems

Don't want to source every part separately? Our prepackaged wellpoint systems include the pump, wellpoints, header pipe, swing joints, and fittings, sized to work together. Each package can be rented for the length of your project or purchased outright.

Not sure which size you need? Send us your excavation depth, length, and soil report, and we'll recommend a system and quote it.

Wellpoint Pumps

The pump is the heart of every wellpoint system. Our wellpoint pump fleet covers three pump types, each available to rent or buy at every Holland Pump branch:

  • Rotary lobe wellpoint pumps (WP6, WP8, WP10, WP12): compact, fuel-efficient pumps that can run dry and handle solids, with flows from 600 to 2,656 GPM.
  • Vacuum assist wellpoint pumps (WP6 VAWP, WP10 VAWP): centrifugal pumps paired with an independent rotary vane vacuum system for strong air handling and flows up to 4,400 GPM.
  • Double diaphragm pumps (WP4 DD, WP6 DD): rugged, primeless pumps for slurries, viscous fluids, and intermittent flows.

Electric, skid- and trailer-mounted options are available, along with partial and full sound enclosures for urban and night work.

Wellpoint Components & Parts

Every component of a wellpoint system is available to rent or buy, individually or as part of a package. All parts are compatible with standard 1-1/2" riser pipe and 6", 8", and 10" header systems.

Wellpoint Dewatering Applications

Wellpoint systems are the go-to method for shallow construction dewatering in sandy, permeable soils. They are common across Florida and the Gulf Coast, where high water tables are part of almost every dig.

Trench dewatering

For sewer, water, and storm lines, the header runs along the trench and moves forward as the pipe is laid.

Pipeline and utility installation

Keeping long, linear excavations dry and stable.

Excavation dewatering

For foundations, basements, and pits on commercial and residential developments.

Lift station and manhole construction

Using a ring of wellpoints around the structure.

Road, bridge and marine work

For use close to rivers, canals, and coastlines.

Wellpoint Equipment FAQs

A wellpoint system is a dewatering method that uses a row of small, shallow wells connected to a header pipe and a vacuum pump. The pump draws groundwater out of the soil to keep an excavation dry and stable.

A single stage of wellpoints typically lowers the water table by around 15 to 20 feet. For deeper excavations, we install multiple stages or recommend a deep well system.

Wellpoints are usually spaced 3 to 6 feet apart. Finer soils need closer spacing, while coarse sands and gravels allow wider spacing. Our engineers set the spacing based on your soil report.

Wellpoints work best in sands and sandy gravels with a high water table, which is why they are so common in Florida and coastal areas. In clays and silts, other methods such as sump pumping may be more effective.

Yes. We rent complete wellpoint systems, including the pump, wellpoints, header pipe, swing joints, and fittings, sized for your job. We can also deliver to site and support installation.
