Glenkiln reservoir

Selwood supported George Leslie in delivering critical upgrade works at Glenkiln Reservoir on behalf of Scottish Water.

To enable installation of a new concrete cutoff and hydraulically operated scour valve, reservoir levels needed to be drawn down and tightly controlled between -1.25m and -0.175m below Top Water Level.

The existing 18” scour valve was unsuitable for prolonged level management due to silt disturbance and pollution risk, requiring a compliant temporary solution.

• Maintain precise reservoir control with flows up to 1,500 lts/sec.
• Ensure full compliance with the Reservoirs Act, SEPA and DWQR.
• Minimise environmental risk, including oil contamination and noise pollution.
• Deliver a compact solution suitable for limited dam crest space.
• Provide reliable, unattended operation in a remote location.

Conventional diesel or electric pump systems were not suitable.

Selwood and George Leslie implemented a dual 600mm siphon system, eliminating the need for large fuel-driven pumps.

• Delivered flows up to 1,500 lts/sec.
• Enabled precise level control via variable valve regulation.
• Operated autonomously once primed.
• Occupied just 10m² compared to approximately 120m² for a pumped alternative.
• ·ncluded inline flow metering for regulatory verification.

· Maintained uninterrupted remote monitoring via Starlink connectivity.
