Sustainability & ESG

At Selwood, sustainability is central to everything we do - from the way we design and repower pumps to how we reduce waste, energy use, and emissions.

Our teams work closely with every customer to identify the most environmentally friendly solution, whether that means powering pumps from onsite electricity, switching to cleaner fuels, or even avoiding pumps altogether by using gravity-fed siphon systems where possible. Protecting the environment is a core pillar of focus for both our clients and us, and we take pride in helping them achieve sustainability goals while keeping projects efficient and reliable. And in 2024, we published a detailed Net Zero routemap.

Beyond individual projects, Selwood benefits from the scale and shared commitments of The Workdry Group. As part of this group, we contribute to major sustainability progress that extends across all operations. In 2024, The Workdry Group delivered reductions in emissions, increased renewable energy generation, and industry-leading waste management results.

“...we are committed to continuous improvement and to making a positive, measurable impact along the way.”

  • What we're doing for the environment

    Net Zero

We’re committed to helping you meet your decarbonisation goals.

In 2024, we published a detailed Decarbonisation Plan, showing us our route to Net Zero by 2050. We’re following that routemap and want to work with partners on the same journey. As we work hard to reduce our own emissions, we want to work with you to solve your own sustainability challenges.

As a business operating in sectors critical to water infrastructure and environmental protection, we are committed to reducing emissions across our fleet, facilities, and supply chain. We continue to invest in low-emission technologies, improve energy efficiency across our sites, and adopt circular approaches to asset management.

100% of our commercial vehicles are Euro 6 rated, and our car fleet is 100% PHEV – with a commitment to having the whole fleet 100% EV by 2035

We’re committed to transparent reporting of our GHG emissions and regularly benchmark our progress with external assessment tools like Ecovadis.

  • What we're doing for the environment

    Stage V engines

As of January 1st, 2022, only engines that meet Stage V criteria can be sold in the EU. The tougher Stage V limits require engines to produce lower particulate emissions than previous guidelines permitted by the use of diesel particulate filters in the exhaust aftertreatment.

We were already manufacturing and supplying pumps that met Stage V standards (Eco5) prior to the restrictions coming into force, and they're readily available to customers who need them.

For example, we are pleased to be contributing pumping support for HS2, the UK’s biggest and most ambitious infrastructure project, which has raised the bar on emissions standards. Parts of the project effectively required compliance with Stage V standards.

  • What we're doing for the environment

    Solutions team

Whether it’s for planned projects or emergency callouts, our teams are always working to minimise costs and environmental impact – for example, by using electric-driven pumps and alternatives, such as siphoning, in our relentless pursuit of more sustainable solutions.

We've also developed our Repower Programme, extending fleet life by upgrading existing pumps with the latest low-emission engines, cutting carbon while reducing the need for new builds. And our growing range of electric and HVO-fuelled pumps helps customers minimise on-site impact without compromising performance.

  • What we're doing for the environment

    Fostering innovation

We continuously invest in research and development to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of our water and wastewater management solutions.

Our focus on innovation through technology enables us to stay ahead when it comes to delivering on increasing environmental regulations and meeting the demands of our customers for products and solutions that minimise the impact of their operations on the environment. From improving our pump and treatment systems to adopting cutting-edge technology, we are committed to helping our customers meet their sustainability goals.

Selwood was the first UK company to offer pumps that can be fuelled by vegetable oil in an industry-leading move that will significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions. All Selwood pumps that have a Stage 3B engine or above can now be run on the HVO fuel as an alternative to diesel.

In addition, all new Selwood pumps manufactured for use in the UK and around the world will be HVO-compatible, subject to individual engine manufacturers’ guidelines.

A group commitment to sustainability

  • Ecovadis - Silver

The Workdry Group earned a Silver Medal, a recognition awarded to the Top 15% of companies assessed by EcoVadis in the 12 months prior to the medal issue date. It reflects the quality of the company's sustainability management system and demonstrates a commitment to promoting transparency throughout the value chain.

  • GRESB - 92%

The GRESB score is derived from an annual assessment that evaluates the sustainability performance of real estate and infrastructure investments across the globe. At The Workdry Group, we use this benchmarking tool to measure our performance, and we recorded a significant 35% uplift from 54% in 2023 to 89% in 2024, and then up to 92% in 2025.

  • UN Sustainable Development Goals

Our Group ESG Framework is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) to ensure we contribute to global progress while ensuring the long-term success of the business.
