Safety Culture Ladder Level 3: Culture is key
In 2025, Vanderkamp achieved Level 3 on the Safety Culture Ladder (SCL), a significant milestone demonstrating that safety is shifting from rule-based compliance to genuinely safe behaviour.
SHEQ Coordinator Vanessa Klumper explains: “We want working safely to become as natural as switching on a pump.”
The journey towards Level 3 brought people from across the organisation together. We had discussions on what working safely means, appointed safety ambassadors, and made it easier to report risks and improvement opportunities.
This has led to greater engagement, more frequent reporting, and a visible increase in safety awareness.
The results are clear: teams address risks sooner, support each other more, and integrate safety into every phase of their work. Clients also recognise and appreciate our professional and safety-driven approach.
Although Level 3 is an important step, safety remains a continuous process, and we know we have more work to do. We will keep investing in training, communication, and collaboration with partners, so that everyone returns home safely every day.
Employee Engagement
We recently completed our first Group‑wide employee engagement survey, providing a valuable baseline for understanding employee experience across the organisation. The survey achieved a 90% completion rate, an encouraging rate for an inaugural survey.
