Hinkley Point C, the landmark nuclear power station being built in Somerset by EDF Energy, is one of the most significant infrastructure projects the UK has ever seen. Once complete, it will generate low-carbon electricity for around six million homes – playing a crucial role in reducing emissions and securing the country’s energy future.
The summary
The challenge
A project of this scale comes with unique challenges. Selwood has a dedicated team, led by Strategic Account Manager James McKiver, who initially lived on site for 18 months and still ensures there’s always someone from Selwood present.
That team includes engineers, electricians and technical support staff, working under a strict 24-hour call-out procedure with a guaranteed response time of four hours.
This hands-on support has helped Turnbull overcome some major hurdles – including keeping the reactor intake tunnels dry to ensure work could continue on schedule and without any environmental incidents
The solution
Currently, Turnbull is using or has access to more than 100 Selwood pumps, including around 30 diesel units, multiple S150 electric models, and a full range of submersibles for dewatering and foul water management. On top of that, more than 70km of pipework has been supplied, along with additional pump sales and ongoing engineering support.
Selwood’s involvement began with a dewatering solution to support the excavation of the heat-sink – a huge area designed to house the cooling water infrastructure for the new reactors. From there, Selwood’s role quickly grew.
Today, Selwood continues to support Turnbull, a specialist contractor within the YTL Group. Originally brought in to manage utilities across the site, Turnbull now delivers a wide range of construction work including ground remediation, fuelling infrastructure and entrance buildings. For any challenge involving water handling, Selwood is their first call.
